Kia Ora,

When I joined the takahē editorial team, just under a year ago, it was my first foray into editing. The flip, between waiting patiently to hear back about my own submissions to now reading countless stories by other writers for takahē pages, has been both challenging and exciting.

Together Jane Seaford and I select the fiction pieces for each issue – reading them over and over again, and attempting to persuade the other when we don’t agree. And we do this all via email as Jane lives in Christchurch and I live in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

I feel that the two sets of eyes reduces the subjectivity that comes with the selection of any piece of writing – it makes me think harder about why a particular story should be included and in turn helps me with my own writing.

This issue includes a wide range of fiction writers – some which are well-known and have appeared on our pages before and also some exciting new voices. We hope you enjoy them all and appreciate the time and toil that each and every one has put into crafting their words.
